About us
Fajar Sikka
Maumere, a home for everyone.
Background
Fajar Sikka was born out of concern for marginalised people across many social groups, including people of diverse genders in Maumere. Poor and marginalised groups have so far received little attention from either the government or civil-society organisations working on social and humanitarian issues. They still face structural barriers to basic services such as economic opportunity and healthcare.
Formal-sector jobs are also hard to come by. Limited education and social access often confine them to informal work where jobs are easily lost. Much of that work is seasonal, while many of them are also the main breadwinners for their families.
In response, Fajar Sikka works to strengthen self-reliant economic power at the community level, and to build skills and knowledge that help the community grow as equal and empowered members of society. Fajar Sikka also encourages the community to speak up and express themselves as equal citizens.
Our name
The name Fajar Sikka honours the culture of Sikka, a place where people can live side by side and accept one another as equal citizens. Fajar means dawn — the first light that gives hope, like the strong source of God's love.
